Kingspan Insulated Panels perform a vital role in ensuring the weatherproofing and water-tightness of the structure when used as a insulated façade support system to carry a range of decorative finishes, such as metal tiles or wood.
The insulated panels act as the performance layer (they guarantee a reliable thermal performance and insulation continuity with no cavities, gaps, cold bridges or interstitial condensation) while also acting as a carrier system; ensuring a different aesthetic appearance can be catered for, adding to the texture of a building, if the architect so wishes.
Façade Support Systems are pre-engineered and allow for a single fix installation. This process can help reduce build times by 50%. These systems are also fire engineered and insurer approved and have been tested and approved to Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) standards.
A Case in Point
A traffic-stopping structure in London has been created with the help of Kingspan Façade Support System. The design of the Post Graduate Centre, known as Orion, at the London Metropolitan University incorporates stainless steel cladding to create a striking and ever changing surface.

Kingspan’s Façade Support has been used underneath the cladding to maintain the air-tightness and stability of the envelope.
The building is a true landmark and has a strong architectural presence in an otherwise unremarkable landscape and it was left to contractor Costain to turn this complex and radical vision into a building. While the three intersecting elements that integrate into the circulatory pattern of the university creates a visually striking edifice, it is the tile support systems underneath the stainless steel rain screen that performs the valuable practical function.
Costain worked very closely with Kingspan Insulated Panels to ensure the composite panels fulfiled their function – to provide an insulated waterproof layer that offered a flat base for the final rainscreen.
Steve Phillips of contractors, Coverite, confirms the insulated panels have a distinct role to play: “Although the Kingspan Insulated Panels are not visible to the public, they nevertheless perform a vital role in ensuring the weatherproofing and watertightness of the structure. They were used to clad the 10,000sq ft in situ concrete building and act as a support to the unusual overcladding.”
