The Kingspan Envirodek structural green roof solution from Kingspan Insulated Panels has been used on a striking new office building in Rotherham.

 

Built by Millstone Building for parent company the Horbury Group and employing architects Race Cottam Associates, the building is now the Horbury Group’s head office. The Crofts has helped to continue the regeneration of the local area.

 

The building’s elevated position offers panoramic views across the scenic West Yorkshire countryside, and the use of Kingspan Envirodek has allowed the construction of a rooftop plant space to help the project blend with the local environment.

 

But the system was not specified just for its aesthetic benefits. The long span structural deck with highly efficient in-built insulation appealed to main contractors Millstone, as it allowed them to avoid the use of intermediate supports and keep installation times to a minimum.

 

Ken Elvin from Millstone said: “We are definitely happy with Envirodek. It gave us a quick, efficient environmentally sustainable solution for the roofing structure and we would certainly consider using the product again.”

 

There are a number of environmental benefits to the system. Climate change is a major concern for us all, and by encouraging more plant life Kingspan Envirodek can help to increase the absorption of harmful carbon dioxide emissions.

 

Then there is the issue of flooding, which can be a particular problem in built-up areas. The Kingspan Envirodek system helps to minimise this risk by increasing stormwater retention and reducing the volume of water that would otherwise contribute to flooding.

 

Kingspan provide specialist advice through their envirocare Technical Services team. At The Crofts, help was given to ensure detailing around penetrations in the green roof offered the right levels of thermal performance and air tightness. The envirocare team offer guidance and advice on a range of topics, such as sustainability, energy efficiency and environmental assessments. They can provide project-specific NBS specifications, as well as whole building energy/ CO₂ modelling to help ensure compliance with Building Regulations Approved Document L2.

 

With a high performance PIR core, Kingspan Envirodek can help buildings to comply with Building Regulations U-value requirements. It is also available in LPCB insurer-approved FIREsafe form and is fibre-free, removing the risk of loose fibres being released.
