A distribution facility in North Staffordshire for clothing company New Look has made innovative use of two building envelope systems from Kingspan Insulated Panels.

 

Situated close to Newcastle-Under-Lyme, the G-Space 300 project by Gladman UK features a warehouse with 53,500 pallet spaces and 24 lorry docks, as well as a three storey office building. It has been linked with New Look’s existing Lymedale facility via a 150m-long covered conveyer system to provide a hi-tech automated warehousing system and distribution centre.

 

Gladman have developed a number of similar buildings, and as an integral part of their standard design specification Kingspan Insulated Panels products are used on all of them. Robert Hogg, project manager for Gladman said:

 

“We specify Kingspan’s KS1000 RW and KS1000 MR composite panel systems as they allow efficient installation without compromising on build quality or visual impact. At G-space 300, these products helped us to overcome some quite specific design demands.”

 

One such demand was the innovative conveyer link between the two buildings. As there were issues with location access, Kingspan KS1000 RW trapezoidal roofing and cladding panels were used to construct the conveyer housing in sections before they were lifted into position by crane. As this was an unusual way of installing insulated panels, Kingspan’s Field Services team provided advice on how the systems could be lifted safely and without damage.

 

The main building also has a distinctive “ship’s bow” shape to some corners, which meant the RW cladding panels were extended out to form an attractive sloping effect. Visual impact was helped further by the use of Kingspan KS1000 MR, an architectural wall panel which has a micro-rib profile and hidden jointing. This allows designers to include variation and design flair in a building envelope without compromising on important factors such as build speed and Building Regulations compliance.

 

Kingspan offers full technical support to all customers, so that challenges such as the conveyer system at G-Space 300 can be successfully resolved.
