A new pedestrian only, mixed use development off The King’s Road in Chelsea is the latest high specification project to benefit from a unique Tile Support System from Kingspan Insulated Panels.
Duke of York Square, Cadogan Estates’ £120m redevelopment of the former campus of the Duke of York’s Regiment, includes high quality housing alongside a range of retail outlets and office accommodation. The redevelopment also incorporates the first new public square to be built in the West End of London for over a Century.
The creation and implementation of the master plan for the 10.5 acre site fell to Chelsea-based architects, Paul Davis & Partners. Paul Davis explains:
“Our principal objective was to retain the sense of grandeur, proportion and appearance of the existing Military buildings, yet avoid any sense of pastiche in the new buildings, to create a stimulating yet practical blend of the traditional and contemporary within the new scheme.”
The contemporary aspects of the design included the use of an innovative tile support system from Kingspan Insulated Panels, market leader in the design and manufacture of pre-engineered roofing and wall envelope systems.
The Kingspan KS1000 TS Tile Support System is a composite panelling system which provides a thermally efficient (reliable low air leakage - 5m³ /hr/m², compliant to Parts L2 & Section 6 Scotland), fast build and a platform for the installation of traditional tiles or slates, which are then removed from the critical project path. The System’s flexibility makes it suitable for both functional buildings and projects like Duke of York Square, where creative form, shape and image are key design factors.
The System also has the benefit of being quick to install compared to traditional roofing methods, with attendant time benefits for the start and completion for internal fit-out trades and client handover.
Audrey Stallard from Paul Davis & Partners confirmed that this had been a consideration in choosing Kingspan. She said:
“The huge benefit of using the Kingspan product is the speed of fit and the fact that it is waterproof straight away, which means you can instantly get on with the work inside. We have used Kingspan on a number of projects without problems. The company works well to our specifications - on this project, for instance, the gutters have been custom made by Kingspan – and we always get good response times.”
Duke of York Square creates an entirely new retail quarter for London’s West End and opens up a site inaccessible to the public for 200 years. The development exemplifies the aims of ‘Designs for a Greater London’, which was published by the Greater London Authority in 2001.
Kingspan’s insulated roof and wall systems are fully compliant to applicable Building Regulations and Standards - Parts L1A, L1B, L2A, L2B (England & Wales), Section 6 (Scotland), Part F (Northern Ireland). The Kingspan KS1000 TS Tile Support System has 100% reliable thermal performance and insulation continuity with no cavities, gaps, cold bridges or interstitial condensation risk. It meets Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) fire certification requirements and is certified to LPS 1181 Grade EXT-B.
The Kingspan KS1000 TS Tile Support System was awarded British Board of Agrément (BBA) certification for high performance in 2006, providing independent verification of the structural performance of the panel’s durability, installation and compliance with Building Regulations in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. This also makes the panels suitable for the residential/domestic sectors where the NHBC are involved, as they generally require BBA certification to meet their technical standards.
A free technical support and regulatory compliance service is available to all Kingspan customers through Kingspan envirocare Technical Services on Freephone 0800 587 0090.
